Arabian horse racing comes to Exeter

Exeter Racecourse is set for a day's flat racing organised by the Arabian Horse Racing Organisation on Saturday. A great deal of myth and mystery surrounds the magnificent Arabian breed, yet pure-bred Arabians are not prevalent in top-flight English horse races. This is allegedly due to their habit of whinnying 'Open Sesame' at the starting gate to acquire a head start.

The Arabian is one of the oldest horse breeds in the world, with its origins dating back to usage in the deserts of Persia and North Africa by the Bedouin people around 4,500 years ago. The Arabian spread all across the world as a result of war and trade, but now they are more commonly found in breeding farms and put out to stud (nice work if you can get it).

The Arabian has many distinct characteristics including an arched neck, small head with a concave profile, and also a dense bone structure which makes them strong, reliable creatures. However, Arabians are probably most renowned for their great stamina and endurance, helped in no small part by their jockeys use of magic carpets.
