Wemb-er-ley, Wemb-er-ley, we're the famous ECFC and we're off to Wemb-er-ley!
0 commentsExeter City pulled off one of the most famous victories in their history away at Oxford United in the play-off semi-finals last night, overturning a 1-0 deficit from the home leg to book a place at Wembley in the final.
The tie looked to be dead and buried when Oxford took the lead early doors on the night, taking a 2-0 aggregate lead to seemingly hammer the final nail in City's coffin. But ECFC hadn't read the script and tore up the form book, grabbing the game by the scruff of the neck and taking the bull by the horns. A goal in each half from Lee Phillips and Adam Stansfield made the aggregate score as level as the devil and the tie went to the lottery that is a penalty shoot-out.
The shoot-out took more twists and turns than a snake on a roller-coaster, with the usually reliable Billy Jones failing to convert the opener, and many Oxford players also losing their bottle. Eventually, Steve Tully stepped up as cool as a cucumber to bury the winner - leaving the Oxford team as sick as a parrot and ECFC over the moon.
