Murdoch bows out with a bang

02/05/07
Aussie winger Alistair Murdoch celebrated his final match for the Chiefs before retirement by bagging four tries against Sedgley Park on Saturday. In doing so he equalled the Chief’s record for most number of tries by a player in a single match, but also robbed opposite winger Jason Luff who was chasing his own record.

The final match of the season had a celebration atmosphere as the Chiefs ran in 7 tries (one of them a penalty try) in an emphatic 43-21 victory, ensuring they completed a successful league campaign by finishing in a highly credible fourth place. The defining moment of the match however, came as a long punt downfield was chased by both Exeter wingers, with Murdoch beating Luff in a race to the ball and crossing the line himself, robbing Luff of his opportunity to break the record of most tries scored in a season.

The aussie mentality of single-minded desire for sporting success has won much admiration – but few friends, as highlighted in England's recent Ashes tour. A cricket match is called a 'Test' because it's a test of manners, and a 5-0 whitewash would suggest those aussies are fucking rude.
