ECFC in season showdown

23/04/07
ECFC approach the final match of the season knowing that a victory at home against Southport on Saturday will almost certainly earn them a place in history as the first Exeter City team to reach a play-off competition.

After a credible goalless draw at Stevenage at the weekend, sixth position is assured as long as ECFC take 3 points in their last fixture, and Burton Albion don't overtake City's goal difference by trouncing Rushden & Diamonds by 13 goals or more – a figure that's unlucky for some, but surely even if their team bus travels under several ladders, runs over a magpie and the full-backs spit-roast a black cat, the Diamonds won't let in that many.

Since the play-off system was introduced, it has been criticised by many (generally fans of teams who finish third) but has also received a great deal of support (generally from fans of teams who finish fourth, fifth or sixth). Whilst it is premature to start thinking about their prospects, the play-offs at least give City fans some excitement/false hope at the end of every season, and ECFC the only chance they have of ever reaching a final (the prestigious Devon Bowl aside).
