Own goal scorer cleared of match fixing
The chief suspect of the investigation was Oxford full-back Rufus Brevett who was suspected to have taken a bung to affect the result. During the match Brevett thundered the ball into his own net from 6 yards.
Investigators spent many hours analysing possible bribery candidates with large Arab gambling consortiums topping the list. Whether the ECFC board had offered Brevett a bung to score an OG was also briefly taken into consideration, before the investigators looked at Exeter’s accounts and realised a bribe of £27.14 and half a pack of chocolate coins would probably not have been incentive enough.
Eventually the investigation was closed when one FA advisor looked at Brevett's previous career stats (an unusual feat for an FA bigwig to look at something actually football related) and noticed that crap left back Brevett has a track record of sticking the ball in his own net. When asked for comment on this incident an Oxford spokesman said "bollocks".
