Exeter celebrates Desert Orchid
0 commentsMany great National Hunt champions have started their career at Exeter, including Best Mate and the late Desert Orchid.
The restaraund at the Exeter track is also named after the prize winning nag. "The Desert Orchid Restaurant has an unrivalled view of the finishing straight and the winning post", or so says the propaganda.
Coming first in it's first steeplechase, in November 1985, Desert Orchid went on to win the Irish Grand National, Whitbread Gold Cup, Cheltenham Gold Cup, and the King George VI Champion Chase (four times). In 71 starts, Desert Orchid won 34 races and was placed in another 23.
Desert Orchid also made a special apperance in October 1999 when the site underwent a £100,000 refit, and this month special 'Dessie-burgers' will be available in the restaraunt.
