Korfball apparently

22/04/08
What the fuck is Korfball you may well ask? Well in the first of our sometimes expose on local sport we can tell you exactly what it is. Well, roughly.

As far as we can tell it's basically netball for mixed teams, but with a few changes just to mix things up a bit.

Teams are made up of 8 players, although there must be 4 of either sex, so if you're looking to get out and meet a few fit ladies (or men if you prefer) you're guaranteed to find at least a few candidates.

The game is played in a field of indeterminate size, split into two zones with a goal at some point within the zone, we think. One team attacks and one team defends within each zone and no players may move between the zones.

According to the Exeter team's website the best way to defend the goal is "by being slightly closer to the basket then their attacker", but as a non-aggressive sport "punching, kicking or hitting of people is prohibited".

Before you get any idea of goosing and grabbing the fleshy parts of the opposing team we feel we should point out that men only compete against men and women only against women in each of the zones. I suppose at least you might get to see a bit of girl-on-girl action.

They also seem to enjoy a good piss-up afterwards so what more excuse do you need for turning out to support our brave Korfballers? The Summer season starts next month so get down to the Grace Road Playing Fields (on the way to Double Locks) for 7pm on a Thursday.
