Chiefs take home victory in controversial circumstances

22/10/07 - 0 comments

Exeter Chiefs maintained their 100% home record with a dour 11-6 win over Newbury Blues on Saturday, although the win was overshadowed by controversy sparked by the match officials' behaviour.

In the second half of the match with the scores level, a try was scored by Chiefs winger Jason Luff. However, unlike the World Cup Final later the same day, a perfectly good try was allowed to stand - and not disallowed by a highly dubious TV replay decision.

The dangerous decision taken by referee JP Doyle to allow a good try – and furthermore award 5 points for doing so – was completely in contrast to the England vs South Africa match.

The thisisntexeter sports dept. did attempt to get an interview with the World Cup Final TV match official Stuart Dickinson to seek clarification, but were told he does not give interviews as strangers make his guide dog nervous.
