Automated systems can't recognise strong accents
2 commentsIn another piece of amazing investigative journalism the Echo have found that automated voice recognition systems have difficulty with strong accents.
Talking to the paper, Mr. Evans said: 'less you'm speekin Queen's ing-lish it canna unnerstand 'e. If sum'ns ill or yu'm a rel'ive in 'ospital, they wannin' to speak to a 'uman not a machine. Them 'avin a laugh!" Or at least that's probably what he said.
Automated systems have a record of being unspectacular at recognising regional accents with Brummies, Scousers and Bristolians having a bad time of it, so now we can add the accents of those from deepest, darkest Devon to the list.
Saying that, it could have just been some bloke Mike Byrne met down the pub shortly before the publication deadline, between writing exciting stories of getting his toe stuck in a tap and his adventures in changing a light-bulb.
