Exeter: A University under siege

21/01/10 - 0 comments

On the 18th of January Exeter University suffered what appears to be a brutal and unprovoked attack on it's infrastructure.

Lecturers were left with nothing but analogue methods of passing on information and many students were denied a fix of grot on their PCs as the entire University campus network was taken off-line following what appears to be a "completely new virus".

under siege - The virus, according to an IT support email, was unique to Exeter and that they were "the only organisation in the world to experience it. None of the mainstream virus software suppliers have seen this virus, and as such, there is no fix.”

The virus apparently attacked Microsoft's Windows Vista computers running Service Patch 2, although it's unclear if un-patched Vista PCs are affected.

The system is mostly back up and running now, but there is still a lot to be discovered about this attack and who is behind the network going dark (Emma Thompson? - Ed).

Was the attack targeted at Exeter by someone who maybe couldn't get in, by that bloody Plymouth lot, or maybe an in-house pet project that got out of control. It would certainly explain how they can be sure it's shiny brand new and never before seen in the wild.

Were you affected? Can you even read the site yet? Hello?
