Echo has another pop at EX4's Eden Lounge

05/08/09 - 0 comments

Once again the Echo is branding the Eden Lounge above the EX4 bar in Fore street as 'controversial' and seem to be exaggerating police concerns about the premiss.

The bar, according to the local chip wrapper, will "once again come under scrutiny before Exeter City Council's licensing committee" as the police think the back alley used to eject unsavoury characters "could be unsafe" (You can add your own pun to the end of that).

What this means is the police are concerned that the back staircase, which is used in the event of trouble (a staircase that according to the bar's owner has never been used), could potentially be unsafe and that people being ejected into a small alleyway down narrow stairs could be dangerous.

Funnily enough, Environmental health officers had no such concern, save a small drain which could be an issue.

To cut a long story short, the police would like to change the documented procedure for ejecting unruly punters, and according to licensing regulations, this needs to be brought before a committee to be agreed upon (Since when has anything good come from a committee?), so the result is a review before the licensing committee.

Hardly the type of scrutiny you'd expect from a den of iniquity and the hub of a massive sex trade operation which the paper seems to have suggested in the past.
