Darkness descends on M5 near Exeter

15/04/09 - 3 comments

The M5 will be just that little bit darker between junctions 29 and 30 after Thursday (April 16th) as the Highways Agency have decided to switch the lights off to save money.

The decision has been touted as a good way to decrease the carbon footprint and give out less light pollution, but lets face it, we all know the driving forces (pun intended) in this economy.

The junctions themselves will still be fully lit, as people manoeuvring and changing lanes might like to see what they're doing. You know, it's almost as if they actually thought about this decision and made an intelligent choice. Exeter City and Devon County councils could take notes from this.

The lights will be switched off between midnight and 5am, although the command control centre will have the ability to turn them back on at any time, should the need arise. Good to know.

Which begs the question what the fuck are our ever-rising taxes actually paying for?

Sanitation, Medicine, Education, Wine, Public order, Irrigation, Roads, Fresh-water system, and Public health. But other than that what do taxes get us?

As well as a war in a legal grey area, MPs expenses which stretch over £200k per person (that's 651 MPs, by the way), masses of unnecessary Whitehall administration, ridiculous spending on immigration and yet medicines that can save people's lives are refused to people using a supposedly universally free health service. Seems like there's a lot of crap I don't give a shit about being paid for by taxes too, oddly enough, I'm paying the tax and yet the things I actually am willing to pay for are being switched off.
