Stig of the dump

22/01/09 - 0 comments

Tenuous links and a breach of contract have given our local chip wrapper an excuse to out the identity of Top Gear's 'The Stig'.

It's claimed that the Stig is a former Exeter University law graduate who went on to take part in Formula 3 racing, but all this has only come to light after he ordered 450 (or 200 depending on where you get your news) limited edition signed images of The Stig to be produced by the Bristonian Gallery 2C in Clifton.

Here's where it gets even odder. After finding out what was needed for the reproductions of the image and finding out the cost of the work he told the owner of the gallery that "if we wanted to go forward with the project we needed to sign a confidentiality agreement, which we did.

"It was then he told us who he really was."

The story was then somehow published in the Bristol Evening Post, without mentioning the Stig's real name, although several national newspapers went on to publish the name. Quite how these details came to light, given that the owners of the gallery had signed a confidentiality agreement is another matter altogether.

Maybe that law degree from Exeter may come in useful after all.
