this isn't exeter - irrelevant news and gossip that probably isn't true.

Another good reason

When we opened our inbox this morning we couldn't help but giggle to ourselves. It seems that the official Express & Echo website, ThisIsExeter.co.uk, has become infected with malware!

Eagle eyed reader Martin sent us in this screen shot he took this morning some time before 9am whilst viewing their site.

The popup reads:

Are you sure you want to navigate away from this page?

ATTENTION! You have not completed the virus scan!
Your PC is still probably infected with spyware!

Please return to antimalware09.net and download AntiMalware 2009 scanner.

Press OK to continue, or Cancel to stay on the current page.

Now this could be caused by a number of things, Martin tells us his computer was clean, and as he doesn't get the message anywhere else it has to be coming from the Echo, so that leaves us with two possibilities.

  1. The site has been hacked and something nasty has been inserted into their code
  2. One of the (many) ads on their website has had something nasty tacked on to it.

Now when we visited the site we couldn't replicate the problem, however it's possible that either they found out about the problem and cleaned up the site, or the advertisement in question was blocked and never got through to us.

But lets be honest, would you really want to risk it?
