Exeter redemption foiled

03/09/08 - 0 comments

A prisoner trying to tunnel out of his cell has recieved a further 8 month on his sentence, which was due to finish next month.

Daniel Vail, 25, hid the rubble from his tunnel in cupboards and hid the hole in the wall with a sheet when not working on it (presumably there were no Rita Hayworth posters available).

When officers heard a banging and a digging from the cell they discovered Vail in two sets of clothes with a knotted sheet rope ready for his escape.

Vail had apparently dug a 3ft by 2ft hole in the wall behind the bunk beds in his cell on the second storey of the prison, but as Vail's defence counsel Mary McCarthy told the court: "There was no prospect of this escape ever succeeding."

Apparently the reasoning behind the attempt was an attempt to get shipped out to another prison as he'd heard another prisoner did the same thing.

According to the BBC "Vail was moved to jails in Dorchester, Gloucester and Bristol" so we're guessing he's been chopped in three now as well.
