What's a Grecian urn?
0 commentsRecruiters in Exeter are apparently very sceptical of the latest figure which suggest that the average salary in the city is around £28k. No shit sherlock.
The problem seems to lie with the statistical analysis of the data. If you work for a company with 45 people on minimum wage (which we reckon works out a little over £11k), lets say 7 middle management types getting £35k and one fat-cat taking home £70k for doing sod all other than looking important and shouting at those beneath them, then on average the company pays a slightly lean looking £15k a year. Of course the true impact is that a vast majority of staff are earning much less than that, but on paper it looks pretty fair.
Statistics are a wonderful beast, you can make them say pretty much whatever you want. Of course if you want to prove low wages you can take out the outliers to prevent the results being skewed, but as I say, it depends on what you want the result to be, as to how you read the data.
It's a shame there isn't a set of data available that excludes fat-cats and seagull managers altogether, showing us what the hard-working people in Exeter are actually earning. We reckon the results would be a lot less favourable.
Another thing which we reckon doesn't help the stats is that whenever these high up managers fuck up, they get a nice warm golden handshake (we think a golden shower is probably more in order, or better yet, get the bastards to stay and clean up he mess they created) and the job is re-filled with someone else who'll probably do exactly the same thing.
So here we go, the big question. How much do you earn? We've set up a poll, so head on over and let us know what the hard working folk of Exeter actually earn, as opposed to the high flying jobs in management that go trough the hands of recruitment agencies.
