Recycling scheme goes from strength to strength

14/01/08
The residents of Exeter raised recycling rates to an all-time high last week, recycling more than 221 tonnes of rubbish in the Marsh Barton depot.

According to the Echo, "That's enough to fill 37 dustcarts - which, if you lined them up, would stretch the length of four and a half football pitches" although they fail to mention whether these are full size pitches, which can be anywhere from 100 to 130 yards long. They also neglected to mention whether this epic amount of recycling was done since the depot opened, or just in this last week.

To help avoid confusion we have converted these figures into more recognisable units.

First of all, 221 tonnes is about the same weight as 3248 average sized adult sheep, or 0.1 space shuttles.

As for their intriguingly odd measurement of the traffic queue trying to get into the recycling centre, we reckon it would be around 1302.4 feet (at 35.2 feet per dustcart) or 2.65358842 * 10-9 Astronomical Units, or 2835.5 standard, unboiled linguine.
