Echo gets decorative swords banned

12/12/07
The Express and Arsehole has today announced on it's website a victory over common sense, as the Government is expected to cave in over their publicity stunt on swords.

Their crusade against reason has unfortunately been listened to by the Bradshaw media machine, which is always keen to appear to be doing good things for the community.

So what's the outcome of all of all this? Well, if you want to have a nice set of decorative Samurai swords hanging on your wall, tough. It will be illegal to buy, sell loan or rent (who rent's a sword?) one of the weapons, including so called fantasy weapons, but if you're one of the rich elite you can still go out and buy genuine swords with sharpened edges, designed to kill, because it's not a replica.

I guess as Mr. Bradshaw sees it, the plebs that make up the general public can't be trusted with replica weaponry, only those who can afford it can have a better class of killsticks lying about the mansion.

Presumably those with large wads of cash in their wallets are 'less likely' to be violently aggressive (or not) as the people who fund the campaign trail are such jolly nice and honest folk.

So where does that leave the rest of us? Out shopping for samurai swords before the ban comes in. If you have a geek in your life, get them that Klingon Batleth while you still can.

The Echo themselves admit that "Bradley Moran was jailed for 17 years for murdering 33-year-old Sidmouth man Matthew Stiling following an argument in a nightclub in 2005" so why the need to ban swords?

If this guy was mental enough to go home and get a sword, what will stop other nut-jobs from getting different weapons? What would stop him getting a large piece of metal from a building site and bludgeoning someone over the head.

Do we need laws preventing the sale of scaffolding poles? How about baseball bats, do they need legislation? What would stop someone getting a kitchen knife and doing a bit of the old stabby stabby? A full size samurai sword is so much easier to see and avoid.

People are idiots and do idiotic things, but lets not spoil it for the rest of us just because there are a few complete pricks out there.

Murder is a crime. GBH is a crime, carrying/wielding a weapon in public is a crime, do we really need specific laws against the purchase and use of every single type of (potential) weapon?

In my view, no. The laws are already there and are perfectly adequate already. This is just a local rag trying to make themselves look good and a media hungry MP jumping on the bandwagon.
