Exeter Council need more money to piss up the wall
0 commentsLocal Exeter City Councillors are desperately trying to get their snouts in the £48m trough generated by the sale of Exeter Airport. But will any of this windfall be used to benefit the people of Exeter? A brief look at their track record would suggest not.
Exeter City Council chief executive Philip Bostock was recently quoted as saying "The airport belonged to everyone, including people in Exeter who paid their taxes towards it, and the city should be part of any plans to spend the money from its sale. It's not about how you look at projects, as Exeter is entitled to a proportionate and fair share..."
But just what would the city council use the money for??? Well, the money might be used to build a twin sister for the monolith of bullshit which appeared on the High Street a few years ago, costing tens of thousands of pounds. Perhaps they’ll seek to pump more money into the German economy in the form of an all year round German market, offering such exotic delicacies never before seen in Devon like mulled wine or sausages (?). Maybe they'll decide to keep the Christmas lights on from August 'til June. Maybe they’ll knock down the Guildhall shopping centre and replace it with, um, how about a shopping centre. Perhaps the councillors will give themselves a pay rise or put the money towards their next holiday, sorry, 'business trip'. Or maybe they should just be done with it and erect a 100ft white elephant outside the council offices.
Wherever the £48,000,000 goes, it's pretty unlikely that it will lead to a significant rise in local services or a halt to council tax rises. So why not email your local councillor and make a few suggestions...
