City school failing our children

02/10/07
Having been released from 'special measures' by OFSTED last term, St. James' High is still failing to educate it's pupils to an adequate standard.

Only 17 per cent of pupils managed to get 5 GCSEs above a 'D' including English and mathematics, although worryingly this is apparently 6.1 per cent improvement in grades since last year.

Even West-Exe Young Offenders institute managed to muster a reasonable 33 per cent of pupils passing with grade 'C' or above.

On the other hand, the Uffculme School for Gifted Teenagers obtained a massive 74.7 per cent including English and maths, making it the highest achieving comprehensive in Devon.

Devon County Council's director of children and young people's services, Anne Whiteley, said: "Obviously exam results are very important. But, in choosing a school, it is vital to consider all the other elements that will combine to ensure a child has a happy and successful school career."

Basically, if you live in Beacon Heath then it's a fair bet your kids will be flipping burgers by their 18th birthday.

Ms Whiteley added "Our schools also provide wonderful opportunities for young people to express themselves, develop their skills and confidence and find lifelong interests which will enrich their whole lives."

Unfortunately colouring in isn't going to get you that company car and 6 figure salary.

No house for you Johnny, have you tried sheltered accommodation?
