Residents of Exeter are apparently getting noisier and noisier according to figures released by the council. Last year there were 853 complaints about noise, with only 520 in 2005.

More than 40% of calls were made by people who were upset at not being invited to their neighbours party and wanted to ruin the fun for everyone else.

Apparently "the vast majority of cases - some 80% - were resolved by an informal letter from the council to the noisemaker" although how many parties go on long enough for the Royal Mail to deliver a letter is unclear.

Councillor Connel Boyle, Lead Councillor for Community and Environment, said: "It is important that everyone has consideration for their neighbours when turning on their stereo or carrying out any noisy activity - particularly in the evening when children and most adults are trying to sleep."
