Surface tension
"So what plonker managed the the recent work on Old Tiverton Road?"
In April the whole road had a nice new coat, as the men with steamrollers and Tarmacadam actually got around to resurfacing the road, and about time too! After what seems like decades of pot-holes and cracks the road was becoming more like Bosnia than a local link-road.
Then in July the council decide is a good time to widen the road. "We'll just nip a foot or so off the pavement," they think, "we won't ask local residents as it's a council pavement, we dont feel the need to discuss it with local inhabitants."
Now they face a problem, the foot or so that has been gained by ripping up the pavement isn't quite the same as the nice fresh tarmac that was laid a few months ago, so now they're resurfacing the whole lot again! A great way to waste money and nobody will ever notice.
You've got to wonder which member of the City Council planning committee is a stockholder in Balfour Beatty, if it's not all of them.
