Man rescued from hole

12/08/07
A massive rescue operation was set in motion on Thursday after a man became trapped down a hole almost 12 feet below the surface.

Devon Fire and Rescue Services' most up-to-date rescue gear was drafted in - but in the end it was the strength and skill of firefighters and paramedics, aided by the BT man's own truck, that saved the day.

One fire appliance from Exeter, two from Topsham and an aerial ladder platform attended, with Group Commander Malcolm Swallow in charge. How exactly an aerial platform can help a man stuck below ground is unclear.

After a gruelling operation the man was successfully removed from the hole. BT spokesman Chris Oram said "It seems that while he was underground he twisted his knee quite badly - in fact, the kneecap popped out."

Ouch.
