Prisoners break out

15/03/07 - 0 comments
In a scene reminiscent to the Shawshank Redemption, an inmate at Exeter Prison made a bid for freedom after using his bare hands and a dustpan brush to dig through the walls.

Darren Humphreys, 40, took just two hours to remove five layers of bricks and break through his cell wall before climbing down a rope made by tying bed sheets together.

It was all going well until he lost his grip and fell the remaining 30ft, breaking his ankle and scuppering any chance of freedom.

His cell mate said he was "just lying in bed reading a book and drinking a cup of tea at about 8pm when Darren stood on the table and started digging at the wall."

Another normal day then.
