Cash and Carillion

Seems you have been following the Echo's lead when it comes to the Carillion bashing. Let's clear something up once and for all.

A company called MOWLEM won the contract and built the six PFI schools in Exeter (well done DCC for selecting a great firm) and, surprise, they went bust. Because they couldn't design and build for shit.

Carillion, one of the biggest global construction companies in the world, bought the sorry remains of Mowlem, and so, took on all of their craptacular projects - including the PFI schools.

All Carillion have been trying to do these past three years is right the wrongs of a cowboy company - and at every turn have been hounded by the local bumpkin press who have gotten the wrong end of the stick.

St.Peters (Which has the highest vandilism rate of any of the schools, is that widely reported?) have been so vocal because they fucked themselves over.

St.Peters was not down to have a new site, just a few extensions - therefore still having control over their own school. When Mr. Perry saw the other school's new buildings,he kicked up a stink to DCC saying 'I want, I want'. So a new building went up, with all the design faults that the other schools had. Mowlem, being...well, Mowlem didn't correct them, even at that late stage. So, a new school for Perry....which mean't no control for Perry - he is now at the mercy of the Carillion! Which he hates. So, seeing as he can't blame Mowlem - he blames Carillion. Good, eh? A victim of his own greeediness.

And Carillion have the maintence contract for the next 28 years, which is the amount of time it will take the DCC to pay for the school. Then it's all theirs.

Good luck.

And Carillion haven't closed their Exeter office or laid off any staff. Because they are stuck looking after poorly made buildings for the next 30 years. To recap - Carillion did not have ANY involvement with the design or construction of the PFI schools.

Anon

Feel better now? Good.

We can't help but notice Carillion are still touting Mowlem proudly on their website: "Carillion [...] combines the capabilities of decades of experience from some of the most renowned companies including Mowlem, Cubitts, Wimpey, Tarmac and Alfred McAlpine".

We still don't think DCC should have gone down the PFI route, sure it's cheaper in the short term (and I think we can all agree why) but everyone ends up paying for it in the end. Just a shame it's the kids getting the shitty end of the stick on this one.
