German prisons are easier to break out of than ever. In an escape Steve McQueen would have been proud of a German prisoner posted himself to freedom.

Max Friedener, 28, escaped from a prison in Darmstadt by hiding inside a cardboard box in the post room before legging it out of the back of the post van.

The escape was only discovered once the van got to the depot and a large hole was found in the bottom of the box, apparently before the guards had even noticed.
