Winscombe more progressive than Exeter
0 commentsThe parish council of Winscombe and Sandford have ended a 115-year tradition of saying Christian prayers during parish council meetings.
Not so long the Lord Mayor of the time (Hazel Slack) and Councillor Yolonda Henson, the council's then Conservative Party leader, introduced a rule excluding council members from the chambers during 'prayer time'.
Instead of these insensitive measures this small Somerset parish has taken it upon themselves to draw a line under this age old tradition in the face of today's multi-belief society with dignity.
Change can be a frightening thing, but we take off our hats to you Somerset. I can't help but wonder if non-Christian Exeter councillors are still being pushed out in to the corridors or forced to patronise something the don't believe in at the start of every meeting.
