40 years and we still haven't been back
0 commentsIt was 40 years ago today that man first set foot on the moon, but all this time later we still haven't been back to clear up the mess we left behind.
Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and that other chap, Michael Collins, who never actually got to go down and play in the dirt, all risked life and limb (mostly life) to show those pesky Ruskies that they could get to the moon first and they damn well did it.
Since then there have been 5 other successful moon landings, the last one in 1976, but none that have captured the imagination of the world in quite the same way.
In a recent statement Collins, who spent the entire mission in the lunar orbiter worrying that he would be making the return journey alone, said that being part of the mission was an honour but that they were no heroes.
"We work very hard; we did our jobs to near perfection, but that was what we had hired on to do. In no way did we meet the criterion of the Congressional Medal of Honor: 'above and beyond the call of duty.'"
And whatever you do, don't call him a celebrity:
"Celebrities? What nonsense, what an empty concept for a person to be."
We couldn't agree with him more.
