Toffs get panties in a twist over Google mapping

03/04/09 - 0 comments

While the rest of the world is looking forward to seeing themselves on Google's new(ish) Streetview service, one village has gone privacy mental and thrown the camera car out with the threat of pointy sticks.

The camera car was spotted approaching on Wednesday when Paul Jacobs, a local resident, sped out to round up a posse with pitch-forks and flaming torches, a lynch mob even the Echo would be proud of, to turf them out of the area.

The irony of all this is that everyone is now reading about the previously unheard of quiet Buckinghamshire village of Broughton, while the world and his wife look at their houses and backyards on Google Maps.

There's a few nice looking swimming pools there, even a tennis court, so obviously there's a fair bit of money floating about the place, it's no wonder they've had 3 burglaries in the last six weeks. There's no point robbing poor people. Even Robin Hood worked that one out.

Residents surrounded the car and phoned police, although by blocking a public right of way and trying to stop someone taking photos from the aforementioned public road, it was Jacobs and his posse who were the only lawbreakers in this play.

"If our houses are plastered all over Google, it's an invitation for more criminals to strike" said Jacobs, although getting the village's details plastered throughout the national press is probably going to have far worse side affects.
