Gay ducks amaze keepers

11/03/09 - 0 comments

A breeding program which was launched when keepers realised there were only 3 examples of the species left in the UK, has failed after the two remaining male ducks fell for each other, ignoring the last female.

Keepers at a West Sussex bird sanctuary brought in the two male ducks, Ben and Jerry, for Cherry, the last remaining female, to help facilitate the mating.

First Ben was brought in, but after the two failed to hit it off (Is this duck speed dating? - Ed) Jerry was brought in as backup. Cherry even started to build a nest after meeting her would-be suitors, but unfortunately for her, the two seemed more interested in each other.

Centre warden Paul Stevens said: "They stay together all the time, parading up and down their enclosure and whistling to each other as a male might do with a female he wants to mate with."

The Blue Duck is native to New Zealand but these are the only three known to be in the UK.

"It would have been nice to get a last clutch of eggs from Cherry but Ben and Jerry do make a lovely couple."

Quite.
