The planet is safe... for now

It looks like the end of the world has been postponed for a couple of months as CERN announce the LHC has been shut down until next year.

One of the super-conductive magnets in the 27km tunnels beneath the Swiss-French border overheated, releasing around a tonne of super-cooled liquid helium, delaying any experiments until some time early next year.

"It does seem that all the systems that are supposed to protect the machine in cases like this worked as far as we can tell. But obviously something went wrong," said the man from CERN.

Hopefully when they're smashing particles together a near light speed to recreate the big bag, early next year, nothing will "go wrong" then.
