Dead man walking

20/08/08 - 0 comments

A Middlesbrough man returning from an impulse holiday in Australia discovered his family and friends mourning his death after seeing an obituary in the local paper.

Neighbours of Michael O'Neill grew worried when they had not seen or heard from him for a couple of months and called police who broke down his door to try and ascertain his whereabouts.

To make matters worse, a few weeks later another man, also caller Michael O'Neill died and was mentioned in the local papers obit's column, apparently confirming his friends worst fears.

Both O'Neills were in their late 50s and both had brothers named Kevin and Terry.

The living Mr O'Neill said: "I went out on June 2 to stay with a friend and when I got back last Monday I found my door had been smashed in!

"My neighbours thought I had died so they got in touch with police who came and broke the door down.

"Everywhere I am going, people I know are grabbing hold of my hand, saying 'I thought you were dead! They can't believe it's me and I'm still alive."

The dead one could not be raised for comment.
