Are NASA taking the piss?

17/07/08 - 0 comments

A leaked memo from NASA has revealed that scientists at the Johnson Space Centre in Houston, Texas are trying to amass a large stockpile of human urine.

The urine is being collected in an attempt to help design a better space toilet, important work after recent problems with the toilet on the ISS breaking down and leaving astronauts crossing their legs with nowhere to go.

The memo is seeking daily contributions between July 21 and July 31, and contains detailed instructions for specimen collection, although the memo was not meant to go public.

Apparently, to design, build and test the systems, Nasa needs around eight gallons of urine every day, that's roughly the amount created by 30 people.

We were going to make a joke about a leak coming from Johnson, but we'll let you insert your own punch-line here.
